Projects

Commercial Warf, Barbican, Plymouth

A section of the sea wall was bulging out and liable to fail at any time.

The project was logistically demanding due its location with a ticket office for boat trips and a busy walkway right beside the site that both needed to remain open during the repair works.

There was just enough room for our 16 tonne long reach excavator above the works. With its 13 meter reach we could reach the whole site without having to move the excavator.

Firstly we stabilized the bulge with bulk bags of stone. We then excavated behind the wall underpinning the walkway by casting concrete beams as we went down. During the excavation we uncovered what transpired to be 17th Century ceramics which were saved and given to the Plymouth Archaeology Society. Some of these pieces were of great interest and the site was featured in an episode of the BBC’s Digging for Britain!

On reaching the bottom a new foundation was laid and the wall was rebuilt reusing as much of the old stone as possible. New Plymouth limestone was sourced to finish the top section of wall and the hand rail was replaced.
